Is Masturbation Wrong for Christians?

Masturbation is one of those topics where there isn’t one easy answer for everyone.

As a young teenager beginning to feel things inside myself I never felt before, I began exploring aspects of my body and discovered processes I didn’t know it had. One of which was masturbation. I wondered if it was right or wrong? Climaxing felt really good. But the whole process left me feeling guilty.

It was the middle of the day, but that didn’t seem to matter. No one would find out. I was alone doing homework. Everything was going well until I got tired and stretched out on my bed.

Mentally, I was exhausted. I needed a boost, so I laid down to take a little nap. But I couldn’t sleep. I felt extremely aroused, and it felt good. I moved a little in one direction, which intensified my arousal. Next thing I knew I was fully masturbating. Once I had erected, no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t stop. I climaxed.

A productive afternoon doing homework turned into an hour of self-pleasure that left me guilty. I was ashamed of myself. Frustrated. Embarrassed I so quickly went to such childish play. I hadn’t even looked at anything provocative. I simply had strong urges for sexual expression. Why did I masturbate? Was it wrong? Was it right?

The Dangers of Talking about Masturbation

Some of you may not be familiar with masturbation. When you find out what it is you may realize, “Oh, yeah, I masturbate.” But when others of you learn what it is, you realize you don’t masturbate but begin struggling with wanting to masturbate.

So, I want to be careful in writing about masturbation that I don’t cause unnecessary struggle for anyone.

At the same time I believe part of finding sexual freedom and healing is understanding our bodies and how they work and what causes us to do certain things. If we never talk about masturbation, it can actually cause people to forever wrestle with lust. So, what I’m going to look at in this post are the questions, “What is masturbation, is masturbation wrong, what causes masturbation, and what are the results of masturbation?”
